This piece was recorded for the Doppler Effect compilation CD Resurgence, released in 1997.

I had been working on a completely different piece, but wasn't getting anything that I was satisfied with. A happy accident prompted me to change direction, resulting in 'Opacity grid'.

Recorded on 4-track cassette, 'Opacity grid' incorporated the previously released 'Refraction grid', which had been my contribution to the Unit Circle compilation Nocturne Concrète. The treatment I gave it here, combined with the additional sounds layered with it (not to mention the altered playback speed), created something kind of sinister sounding.

As originally released on Resurgence, the running time of 'Opacity grid' was cut back to around four minutes and change. This digital download is the first time the piece has been released in its complete, unabridged form.
