about

A collection of recordings exploring some of the possibilities of the Hikari Instruments Monos CV and Duos in combination with the Soma Cosmos. (Is a three-hour album overkill? Yeah, probably.)

The Hikari Instruments Monos CV and Duos are made by a guy in Tokyo who goes by the name Pikamachi. Both are small analogue synths that mostly feature sliders and switches (the Duos has a large dial in its center); the Monos is monaural, while the Duos is stereo.

The Soma Cosmos is a "drifting memory station" designed by Vlad Kreimer. Inspired by Fripp & Eno's work with tape delay (a/k/a Frippertronics), the Cosmos creates delays of slightly different lengths in each channel, with the result being that they drift out of sync, creating an ever-changing pattern (as such).

The Hikari synths in particular can be very unpredictable. As with any synth, no matter how unusual, they can be controlled to some extent. This is probably more true with the Monos; the two channels of the Duos, together with its 'Chaos' slider and large Frequency dial, interact enough that it is a bit harder to restrain. Once you start making CV and audio connections between the two, pretty much all bets are off. Before long, it can be difficult to figure out which sounds are coming from the Monos, and which sounds are coming from the Duos—particularly since at that point moving a slider on one box will affect the other. (The Cosmos makes this confusion complete.)

Not surprisingly, though both the Monos and the Duos are capable of a range of sounds, from sparse and relatively quiet to dense and noisy, when combined they lend themselves to noise and chaos.

The pieces in this collection are organized as follows:
1. Monos and Duos only (reverb added after editing).
2–9. Monos and Cosmos.
10–11. Duos and Cosmos.
12. Duos and Cosmos (reverb added after editing).
13–14. Monos, Duos, and Cosmos.

Except as noted, the only effect added during editing was a bit of saturation; otherwise, I made adjustments to volume and applied a bit of compression as needed (I tend to go very light on the compression), and created fades where appropriate.
